Talks and presentations

Staff from the Marketing and Student Recruitment Office at the University of Essex can provide talks and presentations on a range of topics relating to higher education.

List of talks and presentations

We can provide a talk or a combination of the talks below depending on the school's preference.

  • Why go to university? 
    Aimed at year 12 students, covering the transition between further and higher education, the benefits of choosing higher education, and suggestions on researching and finding suitable degrees.
  • UCAS and personal statements
    A summary of the UCAS system and details of the selection techniques employed by admissions staff. Personal statement writing hints and tips are given using real-life examples. This talk is designed for students in the late stage of Year 12, or early stages of Year 13.
  • Finance
    An overview of the student finance system, covering fees, grants, loans, bursaries, how to apply for finance and some budgeting tips for students.  
  • Student life
    The practicalities of living away from home, financing study, getting involved in university life and using domestic appliances for the first time!
  • Talks to parents/carers
    Evening presentations can be given for parents/carers of Year 12 and Year 13 students detailing the application process, finance, student life and how parents/carers can support their students in the transition to higher education.
  • Staff Training 
    Aimed at sixth form and higher education staff who may be new to higher education guidance, the UCAS process, what university admissions staff look for in a UCAS application and writing UCAS references.
  • Choices
    This talk looks at how students should go about researching courses and institutions, and what it is they should be considering when looking for the right course and the right university.

We also organise visits to our Colchester and Southend Campuses for students to get a feel of campus university life. These visits will often include one or more of the talks above, a tour of campus facilities and a question and answer panel session with current students.
