Re-use of public sector information
University of Essex Library Services ("The Library") are required to comply with the Re-Use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2015 ("The Regulations") which control how information we hold or
create is made available for re-use.
Statement of Public Task
This statement sets out the functions that fall within the Library’s public task under the EU Directive on the Re-use of Public Sector Information 2015. Our public
task comprises all the functions, duties and responsibilities set out in the University’s Information Supporting Strategy, 2014-19.
The full strategy is accessible by staff only. You can request a copy under the Freedom of Information Act.
Although our primary responsibility is to ensure that the students, academic staff and researchers of the University have adequate access to information resources,
services and skills to enable them to achieve the University’s twin goals of excellence in education and excellence in research, we also have a requirement to facilitate
the wider re-use of information made available by us within the University. Examples of the types of information involved might include digitised items from
our Special Collections, as well as content held on our Library website including
library guides and other similar documents.
Please note that the Regulations only apply in the case of materials where the copyright is held by the University. Restrictions may also apply in the case of
personal data of a sensitive nature. It should be noted that information may be supplied in the form originally produced or held (ie in print rather than digital
format). We are not obliged to reformat information to suit a request. We are also entitled to charge an above marginal cost fee for re-use.
Requests for re-use must be made in writing either by email or letter and must include the following information in order to constitute a valid request under the
- applicant’s name and address
- document specifically requested
- purpose for which the document is to be re-used and where it will be re-used

Responding to your request
In accordance with the regulations all requests for re-use will be addressed within 20 working days or an explanation provided if a delay is anticipated. If you
believe that this Statement of Public Task is inaccurate or incomplete, or if you consider that our response to a request for the release of information for re-use
does not comply with the Regulations, you may ask that the matter be reviewed internally by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you are dissatisfied with how we respond to your complaint you may escalate it to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
