Work-based Learning and placements
Work-based learning (WBL) and /placements take a variety of
forms and it is not, therefore, desirable to have a ‘one size fits all’ policy.
The University's guidelines on work-based and placement learning are intended
to be flexibly applied, depending on the nature of the work-based
learning/placement, while clearly articulating a minimum expected standard. The
guidelines apply to all University of Essex provision.
We are working to enhance the guidelines and form to reflect
the increasing range of activity being considered from individual modules to
placement years, and to ensure the level of information requested for approval
is proportionate, while still ensuring everything is considered and in place.
Please contact the Academic Standards and Partnerships Office
if you have any questions about the approval process. Faculty
Employability co-ordinators and the Employability and Careers Centre can also
offer advice on work-based and placement opportunities, as well as other
initiatives to improve student employability, such as internships and the
Frontrunner scheme.
A bank of resources is also being developed during 2012/13 to
introduce departments to the various ways of introducing work-based and
placement learning, and aims to provide example documents and case studies,
which can be used as they are or adapted. Please contact Dr Maxwell
Stevenson in Learning and Development if you would like to suggest any resources
which could be added to this bank.

Breach of Professional Conduct,
Fitness to Practise and Termination of Training Procedure (for students
undertaking professional training courses)
All University students are required to comply with the
regulations of the University regarding conduct. Students enrolled on courses
where a practical professional placement is required (including health, social
work and education) have additional responsibilities placed upon them regarding
not only their conduct but also their professional suitability, as outlined in
relevant professional body codes of practice. Failure to meet these
responsibilities can lead to the
Breach of
Professional Conduct, Fitness to Practise and Termination of Training Procedure
(for students undertaking professional training courses) being
invoked. Students will be notified on enrolment if their course of study is
subject to the terms of this procedure.
