Academic Standards and Quality

Professional, statutory and regulatory bodies (PSRBs)close up of entrance

[Monitoring and Review home page]

PSRBs are 'Organisations that set the benchmark standards for, and regulate the standards of entry into, particular profession(s) and are authorised to accredit, approve or recognise specific programmes leading to the relevant professional qualification(s) - for which they may have a statutory or regulatory responsibility'. (QAA website)

PSRBs are important as they as they ensure that courses meet the professional standards and quality required, which allows students to gain the knowledge and skills they need for their future careers.

Methods and the frequency of accreditation of courses vary.  Arrangements for visits by PSRBs are managed by the relevant departments, except for NHS funded provision which is subject to review by the QAA and is managed by the Academic Standards and Partnerships Office.

Departments are required to send copies of key correspondence concerning accreditation visits and information about forthcoming accreditation schedules to the Academic Standards and Partnerships Office for reporting to the relevant School Board.

Departments follow up recommendations made in PSRB accreditation processes through the internal annual review of courses and periodic review processes.
