Biography
Professor Nigel South is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Partnerships)
responsible for Faculty of Law and Management.
He was a student in the Sociology Department at Essex in the 1970s, he
then studied for a PhD in the field of criminology at Middlesex.
Professor South has taught at universities in London and New York and
between 1981 and 1990 worked as a Research Sociologist at the Institute for
the Study of Drug Dependence (now Drugscope) London, before returning to the
Department of Sociology at the University of Essex in 1990.
Research interests include: the environment and related health and crime
issues (green criminology); illegal and legal drugs, use and markets; crime,
inequalities and citizenship; theoretical and comparative criminology; and
public health.
