We combine small and large-group teaching with regular laboratory-based research exercises throughout the course. Due to our strength in both teaching and research, our modules will often include the most up-to-date theories and findings. By the time you graduate from Essex you will have a deep understanding of how Psychology is used in the world. You will have also developed the essential skills for understanding and evaluating the work of other psychologists, and for conducting psychological research.

BA/BSC DEGREE SCHEMES

The department offers the choice of completing the undergraduate degree as a BA or a BSc degree scheme. The BA and BSc courses are, in fact, identical and follow the same syllabus throughout the 3 years of the degree program. Both courses are fully accredited by the BPS (British Psychological Society). This allows graduate membership of the BPS and access to further professional training in educational, clinical, health, occupational, child or counseling psychology.

Assessment for BA and BSc degrees is based on written essays, practical lab reports, and examinations held at the end of Year II and III. Requests to change between the BA and BSc degree schemes must be finalized before the start of year II.

UNDERGRADUATE

The University of Essex offers a three-year undergraduate degree in Psychology, which builds on its strengths in cognitive science, linguistics and the social sciences. The psychology degree covers all the main subject areas in psychology, including the biological basis of behaviour, language, memory, perception, individual differences and child development.

The degree program consists of a series of modules, which are designed to cover the fundamentals of psychology during Year I and then gradually increases student choice in Years II and III. This progression allows students to acquire all the principal psychological skills first and then to tailor the degree program to their own strengths and interests over the subsequent years. Student choice is maximized in the final year, which consists of a series of optional specialist modules and culminates in an independent research project.
