Our interdisciplinary research includes fundamental as well as applied research, and research findings have had an impact on society in general and health and well-being in particular. We have a long-standing reputation for research excellence which is visible in the funding that we have received over the years. Specifically, recent research has been funded by the British Academy, the EPSRC, ESRC, EOARD, and National Science Foundation. Our academic success is also mirrored in the latest Research Assessment Exercise, with over half of our research defined as either 4* (i.e., "world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour") or 3* (i.e., "internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour").
The Department is home to over 30 nationally and internationally recognized academic staff members and several research staff. Members of staff enjoy excellent collaborative relationships both within the department and also with renowned scholars across the world. Our research findings are being published in high ranking academic journals (see Staff Publications by year), and are also reported about in the mass media. Researchers have access to state of the art facilities in the Centre for Brain Science, the Hearing Research Laboratory and the Visual Perception Unit. These include eye movement recording, EEG, electromagnetically shielded chambers, NIRS, TMS, sound proof booths and other psychophysiological measurement facilities.
To increase and foster intellectual discussion about research findings, we are also host to a very active program of research seminars, featuring distinguished speakers from outside the Department and our own research staff presenting their latest research and ideas.
