Research Methods in Psychology (PS114)

PS114-4-FY: Research Methods in Psychology

The module co-ordinator will be Dr Deborah Fantini to whom queries should be addressed.

This module provides an introduction to research design and methodology. Students will be introduced to the basic principles of research design, and to a variety of experimental and correlational techniques for studying behaviour. Appropriate techniques of statistical analysis will be applied to data collected from experiments. Students will be expected to write laboratory reports for all the research they carry out, and these will form part of the assessment.

A full outline of the module will be distributed during the first lecture. The module consists of a 1-hr lecture and a 1-hr practical class each week. Dr Deborah Fantini, Dr Gethin Hughes, Dr Kevin Dent and Dr Steffan Kennett and Dr Helen Standage will deliver lectures and/or practical classes. Dr Steffan Kennett will provide additional study skills tutorials.

Assessment of PS114 will be based upon coursework (50%), and an end-of-year exam (50%). The coursework mark is made up of four laboratory reports (worth 20% or 25% of the coursework mark) and the research training component (worth 5% of the coursework mark).

The end-of-year-examination will address material from the textbook, the lectures and laboratory classes.

A minimum mark of 40% in both coursework and the end-of-year examination is required to pass this module. You can expect to be asked to resit the examination in September if your examination mark is below 40% and to complete additional coursework over the summer if your coursework aggregate is below 40%.
