Who do I need to know?

Frequently Asked Questions                                                       Welcome Talk Year 1.pdf

Psychology is a fascinating subject – and the University of Essex is a great place to study for a psychology degree. This web page has been designed to give you more information about your psychology degree and the Psychology Department where you will be studying.

We’re looking forward to meeting you when you arrive! We hope that the information on this web page will tell you everything that you need to know before the start of Welcome Week on Monday 30 September 2013.

What will I be studying?

In Year 1 of the Undergraduate Psychology Degree Scheme, all students take the same five psychology modules and choose a sixth module taught by a different department in the university. In Discovering Psychology (PS111) you will learn about the key concepts, theories and findings that psychologists use to help them describe, understand and explain human behaviour. In Research Methods in Psychology (PS114) you will learn how psychologists test theories and generate new knowledge by conducting carefully designed investigations of human behaviour. In Statistics for Psychologists (PS115) you will learn how to analyse and draw conclusions from the data that are collected when psychologists investigate behaviour. In Preparing for University Psychology (PS116) you will learn a variety of skills and techniques that will enable you to get the most from your psychology degree. In Psychology Careers and Employability (PS117) you will learn about how you can use your degree, career planning and the resources available to assist you in your career development. For more details of your five psychology modules, follow the ”more information” links below.
