Undergraduate courses

You can study philosophy as a single honours degree or in combination with other subjects as a joint honours degree. Courses are three years of full-time study and can also be taken as a four-year option including a year of study abroad.

  • BA Philosophy

    Our BA Philosophy combines traditions of Anglo-American analytical and European Continental philosophy. You study a wide range of major thinkers, from Plato and Aristotle to Marx, Nietzsche, Freud and Sartre, and through them learn to engage critically in fundamental questions about how we experience and understand the world, such as the meaning of life, our ethical responsibilities to other people, the crises of capitalism and the role of religion.

  • BA Philosophy, Religion and Ethics

    BA Philosophy, Religion and Ethics provides an exciting and cohesive programme of study in philosophy, with a special focus on questions related to religion and ethics, including fundamental issues such as:

    • the meaning of life;
    • the relationship between faith and reason;
    • arguments for and against the existence of God, and;
    • the moral status of abortion and euthanasia.

    You study both classic texts and on-going debates through a range of philosophical traditions, equipping you to engage with these discussions in an informed and critical way.

  • BA Philosophy and Art History

    Our BA Philosophy and Art History course offers you the opportunity to study two of the most fascinating humanities subjects. Our unique course considers the fundamental questions raised by both disciplines, as well as their historical contexts and practical applications, allowing you to utilise the knowledge of one to inform the other.
