Useful Information and Forms
Please feel free to download a copy of one of the below forms if you have
been unable to attain one from the graduate office.
Requesting References
Members of staff expect to be asked to act as referees for
their students. If you would like one or more particular members of staff
to act as a referee for you then please ask them in advance. The best way
to do this is either in their office hours, or in writing/e-mail. Do not
leave it until the last minute and expect a reference to be produced within the
next day or so. They do have other things to do, or may be away from the
University.
Students applying for grants from funding
bodies must ensure their referees are available to write references at the
required time. Arts and Humanities Research Council applicants should
ensure that completed forms reach us by 15th March for references.
Members of staff are often away from the University during vacations,
undertaking research, attending conferences, or even having a holiday.
Every reasonable effort will be made to provide a
reference for students who have studied in the Department, within a minimum
period of three years following departure from the University. Requests
received outside of this time scale may be met if a member of staff is equipped
with the necessary information on the student and is willing to provide a
reference. Thereafter, factual statements, including attendance dates and
marks, may be provided where no individual member of staff is available to
supply a reference, using records in the departmental office or central
administration.
A copy of any references issued will be retained within
the Department for a period of six years following your departure from the
University, ten years in the case of research students. If you would like
the Department to keep a copy of your references beyond this date you will need
to give your written consent.
Requests for references should be submitted on this
form.
