Graduate events
News and events
Our news and events section contains the latest information about our research,
publications and conferences, as well as the activities of our staff and students.
Graduate seminars
Our postgraduates organise an ongoing programme of seminars that provide regular opportunities for students to present work to their peers in an informal setting.
All students are welcome to attend the seminars.
If you would like to present at a future graduate seminar, please e-mail Goedele Caluwe: gsdcal (non-Essex users add @essex.ac.uk).
Graduate conferences
We host an annual International Graduate Conference organised by our postgraduate students. The programme is chosen following a call for papers and includes graduate presenters from
Essex, as well as institutions across the UK, Europe and the world.
The theme of our 2013 graduate conference was ‘Nature’ and the keynote speakers were Professor Robert Stern from the University of Sheffield and Dr Fiona Hughes from the University of Essex.
The call for papers for the 2014 graduate conference will be released towards the end of autumn term 2013.

Reading groups
Our students and staff run ongoing reading groups dedicated to particular philosophers and topics. Current reading groups include phenomenology, critical theory, Aristotle,
Heidegger, and Descartes.
Descartes reading group
The Descartes reading group provides an opportunity for philosophy students to work through and discuss the major work of Rene Descartes, with a view to finding out why Descartes
is known as the father of modern philosophy. Our group meets every Thursday, 11.00am - 12.30pm in room 4.319. If you'd like more information, or are interested in coming along,
please e-mail Nicole Osborne: nosborne (non-Essex users add @essex.ac.uk).
