How we communicate with you
We will normally contact you via e-mail so please check your e-mail everyday. We will use e-mail to notify you if a lecture, class, or seminar has
been postponed or cancelled, as well as to advertise School events and other opportunities.
Official letters will be sent to your contact (term-time) address and via e-mail. Please make sure your contact details are up-to-date. You can change your contact details using
the myEssex student web portal.
You can also keep up-to-date with news and events by following our Philosophy at Essex Facebook page, as well as regularly checking
our news feed, seminar pages, and notice boards.

Reference request
Providing references for current and former students is an important service we provide. It enhances your employability by giving personalised endorsements of character
and achievements related to positions and study programmes you are applying to. Please use our reference request form (.pdf) and make sure you ask staff members with plenty of time in advance of when the reference is needed.
If you are a final year student, applying for grants from funding bodies to support graduate study, please check that your referees are available to write references at the
required time. Deadlines often fall during the Easter vacation when staff may be away from the University.
We aim to provide a reference for graduates up to three years after they the University. It may be possible to receive a reference after this time if a member of staff has
the necessary information and is willing to provide a reference. Where no individual member of staff is able to supply a reference, we may be able to provide factual statements, including
attendance dates and marks, from our office records .
A copy of all references will be retained within our School for a period of six years following the date on which the reference was written (ten years in the case of research
students).

Reading week
Reading week is normally week 8 in the autumn term and week 21 in the spring term. No lectures or classes take place during reading week, unless you are notified by your lecturer
or class teacher. If a member of staff has missed a lecture or class due to illness, or for any other reason, reading week may be used to catch up on that missed session.
