Concessionary fees for University of Essex staff
Concessionary fees for University of Essex staff (.rtf)
Members of staff have an entitlement to concessionary fees for some degree courses providing certain conditions are met. This note sets out the arrangements which have been agreed.
Scope of the concessions
- Part-time Undergraduate degrees
- Part-time Postgraduate taught degrees
- Part-time Postgraduate research degrees
The concessions apply to standard fees. Any premium fee excess must be met by the employee. There are no concessions for full-time degrees, or for individual modules.
The concessions do not apply to courses offered by the Business and Management Training Centre or Language courses offered by the Department of Language and Linguistics as part of their Open Languages Programme. They each have separate special arrangements for staff enrolling on their courses.
Current members of staff
Conditions for eligibility for concessionary arrangements:
Academic Staff with a contractual requirement to undertake research and Research Officer/Fellow staff who are paid on Grade 7 or above are eligible for the concession from the time they take up their post with the University.
The concession is available to all other staff who have been in continuous employment with the University for at least two years at the time their course begins.
If an employee changes post within the University and the proportion of time the employee is contracted to work changes then the fee concession will be changed accordingly, with effect from the beginning of the next term. If an employee leaves the University then the concession will cease with immediate effect.
Details of concession
The fee concession is pro-rata to the proportion of time worked by the employee whilst they are studying for their degree/course e.g. a full-time member of staff will be entitled to a full fee waiver, a part-time member of staff on a 0.4FTE contract will be entitled to a 40% fee waiver.
Verification of employee status
The employee will need to complete an application form available from the Graduate School or Human Resources. The status of the employee will be checked by Human Resources before the person registers for their course or module. Human Resources will notify the Graduate School of any subsequent changes to their employment contract.
Retired members of staff
Retired members of staff who have at least ten years service with the University of Essex at the time of their retirement will be entitled to a fee concession. The concession will be proportional to the nature of their contract prior to their retirement e.g. full-time contract will have a full fee waiver; 0.6FTE contract will have a 60% fee waiver.
