Q. How much holiday do I have left?

A. Your Head of Department/Section or your Line Manager will have a record of your holiday entitlement and how much holiday you have taken. Details of holiday entitlement can be found in your Conditions of Service. Use the link on the left of the page.

Q. What is my retirement age?

Q. How do I report my sickness absence?

Q. I am on long term sick leave. How much sick pay am I entitled to?

Q. When I want to leave the university's employment what should I do?

A. You need to first agree a leaving date with your Head of Department/Section taking into account your notice period (this will be in your conditions of service).  You then need to put this in writing, sending a copy to Human Resources Services for action.  Your P.45 will be either included with your last salary payment or sent on to you from the Payroll Office (you may need to check that they have your latest address).

Q. I am pregnant. What employment rights do I have?

A. The Human Resources office has a package of information for expectant mothers - please request a pack (ext. 3500 or e-mail staffing@essex.ac.uk) and read the information on maternity benefits prior to making an appointment to speak to your Human Resources Manager/Officer and Head of Department/Section or your Line Manager. 

Q. What are Keeping in Touch (KIT) days?

A.  ‘Keeping in Touch’ (KIT) days are a provision under the Work and Families Act 2006 particularly intended to help employees on maternity/adoption leave with the process of resuming work after a period of leave. Q. My wife/partner is expecting a baby.  What rights do I have as the father?

A. If you have over one year's service you are entitled to 2 weeks Paternity leave on full pay following the birth of your child. 

Q. I want to get my eyes tested and I believe that the university may pay for the eye test - what do I need to do?

Q. I want to advertise a vacancy - how do I go about this?

A. You need to read the recruitment and selection guidelines for academicstaff or all other staff and then speak to the link Recruitment Officer (see 'who to contact' above) who is responsible for your department/section.

Q.  Where can I get a research leave form?

Q. Can I undertake outside paid work?

A. If you are a member of academic or academic-related staff you should apply for permission to undertake outside paid work.  If you are a member of the support staff you do not need to obtain permission to undertake other work, but it should not interfere with your ability to carry out your full duties at the University, and you should normally not work more than an average of 48 hours in any week.

Q. When will the University be closed over the Christmas period and what are the dates of public holidays?

A. The University will close at the end of the normal working day on Friday 23 December 2011 for the Christmas holiday period and will re-open at the start of the working day on Tuesday 3 January 2012. Details of facilities available over the Christmas period will be circulated during the Autumn term.

For the academic year 2012-13 the University will close at the end of the normal working day on Friday 22 December 2012 and will re-open at the start of the working day on Wednesday 2 January 2013.
