  • Edge Hotel School

    Edge Hotel School

The Edge Hotel School is the first hotel school of its kind in the UK, where students learn and work alongside hospitality professionals – helping to run a real-life, AA-recognised luxury country house hotel – Wivenhoe House, based in the grounds of the University of Essex Colchester Campus.

The Edge Hotel School experience is unlike any other student experience. The School enables students to combine a fantastic breadth and depth of practical experience with a fast track to a respected degree in hotel management. Delivered through a dynamic combination of study days and hands-on experience, it covers all aspects of this living, working hotel, from front of house and housekeeping, to restaurants and kitchens, as well as the planning and operations involved in conference events or weddings. The BA(Hons) Hotel Management is an intensive course during which students study for 45 weeks in the year, with around six weeks’ holiday.

Students rotate amongst areas in the hotel, covering all the shifts and roles hotel staff do, and have to be professional, presentable, and punctual. On the other hand, this is a student experience, and students will benefit from living on campus, with access to all the University of Essex’s resources and facilities.

By equipping students from the outset with practical and management skills as well as academic theory, the course aims to get students started in their career as soon as possible. The two-year, intensive programme reflects the realities of life in the hospitality industry, and is designed to make students more employable and better prepared for a job in hotel management.

There are three annual intakes for the Hotel Management degree commencing in January, May and September. To be accepted onto the fast track Hotel Management degree or its progression routes, students will need the potential to succeed both academically and practically. Unfortunately, at this stage Edge Hotel School is unable to accept applications from international students. Find out more about the entry requirements.

  • South Essex College of Further and Higher Education

South Essex College of Further and Higher Education is an innovative and successful College that is one of the largest colleges in the south east of England.

The University's collaborative partnership with South Essex College began in 2000 and initiated an HE presence in the south of the county which has now been expanded by a new University building in Southend, further widening access in a region with a history of below-average rates of participation in HE.

The Minister for Lifelong Learning and Higher Education formally launched the partnership in 2002 and by 2003, the College's plans for a new campus became a reality when the Principal, Jan Hodges, signed a partnership agreement investing over £52 million in a striking new building in Southend's town centre.

The partnership between the University and the College has enabled the introduction of an extended range of new undergraduate courses with a strong vocational/professional focus.  Courses are developed in consultation with local employers and industry practitioners to give students the best possible grounding in their careers.

The College was one of the first 16 pathfinder Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in the country, achieving CoVE status in 2001 for its expertise in Media Technology, and in 2002 the College became the only Microsoft Regional Centre in the eastern region and one of only 16 in the UK.  Following a merger with Thurrock and Basildon College in January 2010, South Essex College is now the largest FE College in the eastern region.

Since 2000, the University has validated over 40 Honours and Foundation degrees at SEC in a range of subjects including Art and Design, Business, Computing, Education, Journalism, Media, Music Production, Performance Arts, Social Studies and Sports Studies.  The College also offers initial teacher training courses for the lifelong learning sector.  There are currently over 800 full time equivalent students on HE programmes at the College.

International partners

Our links with international institutions include:

Our School of Law delivers dual awards – our LLB English and French Laws (with Maîtrise/Master 1) – in partnership with our three French partner institutions:

Further information on our current partnership activity is available from our Academic Standards and Partnerships Team.

Our partnership strategy

Our strategy is to develop a diverse range of higher education provision with partner institutions which will complement our traditional academic offering to students on our main campuses and increase access to higher education by non-traditional students. We encourage our partners to build an internal higher education culture with a strong sense of ownership by their course teams. Our validated courses are developed with internal and external academic and employer involvement to reflect the needs of our partner institution’s target markets.

The majority of courses we validate at our academic partners are in vocational or professional subject areas. Many have been designed to meet the needs of students for whom a traditional programme of three-year full-time study is not a viable option. Essex and our academic partners work with employers and with regional and national stakeholders to widen access to higher education, especially in areas of the country where below-average participation rates have existed for too long.

Academic provision at our partner institutions is overseen by a Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Partnerships. Two Senate committees, the Partnerships Education Committee and the Joint Academic Committee for University Campus Suffolk, have responsibility for the approval and ongoing monitoring of our partnership provision.

Our Academic Standards and Partnerships Team in our Academic Section is responsible for the operational management, support and development of our academic partnership activities.
