Outreach Summer Schools
Introduction to Summer Schools

The University of Essex has been running Higher Education Summer
Schools since 2003. Over the years, the Outreach team
has been able to expand and develop its Summer School provision. This
year the University is running two Easter events and eight summer
events.
The Summer Schools are funded through the Aimhigher initiative
(funded by HEFCE), the European Social Fund (ESF), and the University
of Essex. They are all completely free of charge for students and
parents/carers (as appropriate) to attend, including transport to and
from the University, accommodation and food.
Summer Schools offer an insight into the range of subjects and
courses on offer in HE and enable participants to experience student
life first hand by meeting current students and staff, engage in
subject taster sessions, careers activities and a variety of social
events. The programme aims, through raising aspirations and breaking
down barriers, to widen participation in higher education by young
people in under-represented social groups.
Summer Schools are particularly focused on students who are less
familiar with higher education, perhaps because they don’t know many
people among friends and family who have been to university and who
can advise them on what choices to make. Summer Schools are targeted
at students who are judged to have the ability to progress to higher
education but whose family and/or educational background is such that
they might not apply. A full list of the eligibility criteria is
listed on this website.
We welcome applications from students from all cultures and
backgrounds, including care leavers and students with disabilities.
