Microwave Ovens

Microwave ovens cook food by using high frequency radio waves. Microwave energy can be absorbed by the body and produce heat in exposed tissues. Organs with a poor blood supply and temperature control, such as the eye, have a higher risk of heat damage. However, thermal damage would only occur from long exposures to very high power levels, well in excess of those measured around microwave ovens.

Safety

There is little cause for concern about microwave leakage from microwave ovens unless the door hinges, latch, or seals are damaged or very dirty. If you believe your oven might be leaking excessive microwaves, contact the oven manufacturer or the University has specialist officers who give advice on the use of ionising and non-ionising radiation. Please follow the University and Departmental Advisers on Ionising and non ionising radiation link under Advice and Assistance to the right side of this page.
