Lunchtime walks

Are you making the most of your lunch break? Over the spring term a
group of intrepid walkers has been braving the elements to get out and
about twice a week for some fresh air and gentle exercise. Why not join
them? Walks are around 40 minutes long with an option to escape after 20
minutes. Walks are on paths while the ground is soggy although
“sensible” shoes are recommended. As well as getting away from your desk
to refresh yourself properly at lunch time the walks are an opportunity
to meet new people and catch up with old friends.
The starting point for walks is the round bench in
Square 5 at 1:05pm. Walks take place on a two week pattern, Tuesday and
Thursday one week and Wednesday and Friday the next. No need to book –
just turn up!
Walks are led by Sara Stock. On days when she can’t be
there please gather and walk without her.
Sara is happy to be contacted for more information –
e-mail sstock or ring 4853.
The walks take place on the following days:
January 2011
4, 6, 12, 14, 18, 20, 26, 28.
February 2011
1, 3, 9, 11, 15, 17, 23, 25
Nordic Walking and Jogging
The Sports Centre have been trying
hard to set up
jogging and Nordic Walking groups for staff who want to improve
their fitness. Unfortunately they have been unable to find a jogging
coach and the person they had in mind to provide Nordic Walking coaching
is unable to do it at this time. They shall keep trying and let you know
if coaches become available. If you know of anyone that can help, please
Laura Eddie know on ext 3392.or e-mail
leddie.
In
the meantime you can find further information about Nordic Walking at
www.nordicwalking.co.uk
National Stress Awareness day (3 November)
Why not take a break and join Sara stock for a lunch time walk today. Meet
on square 5 at 1:05pm. For further information and future dates see below.
Take a look at our guidance on
stress. Our information for
individuals and
managers
has recently been updated to make it easier to find
the information you want. You will also find information on
support services
available to staff, including free confidential counselling and
Occupational Health advice. Also, look at the
Befit4work
website for information and activities to help you improve your health
and wellbeing. If you don’t have access to the website, you can contact
OHSAS for information on the above.
Swine Flu Update - Vaccination
Swine Flu vaccination is now available through the NHS and
individuals in the priority groups should be contacted by their general
practitioners. For more information on the priority groups and the
vaccination programme see:

Coping with snow and icy conditions
Despite improvements in the weather conditions, extreme care should
still be taken while travelling to work. Efforts have been made to keep
carparks and main thoroughfares open but please exercise caution. For
updates on weather conditions, check the University website.
Below are useful documents containing advice on how to cope with the
adverse weather condition.

Pregnancy and Work
We
have a new
Pregnancy
website
(follow the
A -Z link
from our home page), with
guidance to help you and your manager to ensure your safety at work
while you are pregnant.
Certain work activities may put pregnant employees or their unborn child
at greater risk of harm, so it is important that if you become pregnant,
you tell your manager as soon as possible. You and your manager can then
discuss your work and agree what to do about the jobs that may be
putting you or your baby at risk.
Over 40’s health checker
The NHS has launched a
new MidLiifeCheck service.
The service helps you assess your health and plan small changes to
improve your lifestyle. It gives advice and access to support on healthy
eating, physical and mental wellbeing, smoking and alcohol. You’ll find
the tool at
www.midlifecheck.co.uk.
Sort it or report it!
Of the
295 incidents reported to OHSAS during 2009, 77 or 26% were slips, trips
or falls. Some resulted in serious injuries, such as broken bones. Could
some of these have been avoided – YES! With minimum effort from
everyone.
Walking
around a spill or over a trailing cable might keep you safe, but what
about the next person who walks by? Preventing slips and falls requires
team effort. By sorting or reporting it, you keep yourself and
co-workers safe.
-
Look out for and report uneven,
loose and irregular surfaces as well as wet, oily and greasy
floors.
-
Good choice of footwear can prevent
many slips. Make sure your footwear is suitable for the working
environment and weather conditions.
Keep things tidy. Avoid trailing cables or obstacles on the floor. You
don’t want to be the cause an accident.
Getting help
If you do fall or see an accident make sure you know
how to get help. The University’s emergency telephone numbers are 2222
(Colchester) 8200 (Southend) and 0208 508 5983 (Loughton Reception).
Please don’t forget to report incidents (including “near misses”) to
OHSAS. We can’t get remedial action taken if we don’t know there is a
problem. You can download the
Safety Incident report form from the OHSAS website.
It’s
time!
If you want to join in, we can help you get fit?
On
Sunday 25 July 2250 women will attend the Race for Life event at the
Colchester campus. They will walk, jog or run 5k to help smash a
fundraising target of £130,000 for Cancer Research. Why not join them?
It’s a great opportunity to improve your fitness, have fun and raise
money for a worthy cause. For information see
www.raceforlife.org
If there is sufficient demand, the Sports Centre are looking at setting
up
jogging and Nordic walking groups,
both of which can help you get fit for the event. If you are interested
contact David Gladwell on ext 3250.
Help thy
neighbour and get sued?
It was sno’ joke trying to get around in the snow and ice earlier
this year. The snowy weather also brought an avalanche of silly scare
stories about people risking being sued for helping their neighbours by
clearing the snow.
The reality is that whilst, there is a remote theoretical risk of being
sued, it is pretty unlikely that someone is going to successfully sue
you for trying to do your best to make things safer. Clearing the snow
also makes slipping far less likely.
The risk of someone hurting themselves through slipping on
un-cleared snow is far greater than the risk
of doing nothing for fear of being sued.
Lunchtime
walks
Some
hardened employees have been braving the snow and ice to join Sara Stock
on her new guided lunchtime walks. If you want a break from your desk,
to clear your mind, get some fresh air or burn off a few calories, why
not join them? You may also meet some new people and be able to catch up
on some Campus gossip. The 20-40 minute walks take place twice a week at
the Colchester campus, meeting at 1:05pm in Square 5.
For further details see the OHSAS website or contact Sara Stock
by emailing sstock or telephone
4853.
OHSAS Awareness and Wellbeing Day (Colchester Campus) -
Feedback
Thank you to those of you who came along to the special
event we held for staff on 30 November. The purpose was to raise staff
awareness of the services OHSAS provides. Over 100 staff from the Colchester
campus attended our event and the feedback has been very positive. The
winner of the prize draw was Gillian Gravatt, from the library. She won a
£50 gift voucher kindly donated by Waitrose Supermarket.
At the event, staff had the opportunity to discuss their
health and safety and occupational health issues with OHSAS advisers. There
were information stands focusing on stress, manual handling and computer
workstation safety. Susan Hawkins, the Occupational Health Adviser gave
advice to staff on work related health concerns. Many took advantage of the
health assessments, which were provided with the assistance of the Human
Performance Unit. A live fire demonstration was also held on Square 5.
A popular activity was the “hand wash challenge” a visual
demonstration of how well we really wash our hands. Staff also enjoyed the
Poi spinning and juggling sessions provided by the University’s Juggling and
Spinning Society.
There was lots of information available for those who
wanted to improve their health and fitness. Staff who wanted to improve
their health and fitness were able to find out about cycling from Richard
Monk, from
Colchester
Cycling Champions, or lunchtime guided campus walks from Sara Stock. If
you are interested in the lunchtime walks and didn’t get your name on Sara’s
list on the day, email sstock or telephone extn 4853.
There was a lot of interest in the following activities:
which are all available at campus:
-
Rosemary Conley Slimming Sessions: These take place
on Thursday lunchtimes. There are 2 sessions 12:00 – 1:00 and 1:00 –
2:00. For further details email: ohstaff or telephone extn: 2399
-
Shiatsu: Available on Fridays
-
Reflexology: Available on Wednesdays. To book....
-
Poi spinning and juggling run by the University’s
Juggling and Spinning Society. Find out more at
www.essexstudent.com/society/jugglingandspinning.
(NB: Shiatsu and Reflexology are provided by external
practitioners at the University’s Occupational Health Clinic (Room 3.109 -
level 3 Social Sciences building) of the Colchester campus).
The OHSAS team are grateful to all staff who helped us
and the volunteers who freely gave their time on the day. Also to Waitrose
Supermarket who kindly donated lots of free fruit and the draw prize.

Stress Awareness Events 2011
To mark National Stress Awareness Day on 2 November the University held a
week of events at the Southend and Colchester Campuses to raise awareness of
stress at work and how to manage the symptoms. This included incentives to
encourage you to take time for a lunch break, anti-stress freebies for
participants in events and entry to our free prize draw.
Southend Campus started the week on Monday 31 October with mini health
checks provided by the Occupational Health Service and a relaxation room
with gentle music and soft seats in the gateway Building Chaplaincy. On
Thursday 3 November staff were prepared to giggle and have fun at a
light-hearted Laughter Yoga session that combined laughter exercises with
yoga. The week at Southend ended on Friday with Sam Haylock taking staff for
a lunchtime walk and ice cream.
A Tuesday Taster started the series of events at Colchester. Dr Valerie
Gladwell and Dan Brown from Biological Sciences spoke about their latest
research. They explored what stress is, described how it can be measured and
give the opportunity to discuss methods of reducing stress in the workplace.
On Wednesday 2 November there was an information stand on Square 4,
where the Health and Safety Advisory Service and Human Resources gave tips on
dealing with stress and provided information on what the University is doing to
help you.
The Occupational Health Service held an open clinic offering mini health
checks and advice on stress management. This proved to be particularly
popular with over 200 people attending. Advice on relaxation and posture was
available from Yasuko Milner, a specialist in Shiatsu.
The Staff Common Room Association opened its doors
to non-members offering free tea and cake and the opportunity to see the
facilities and find out more about membership.
On Thursday 3 November Thomas Yap our Anglican Chaplain invited staff to
join him for a cup of tea with a choice of teas from around the world,
including a demonstration of a Chinese tea drinking ritual. While the Knit &
Natter Group also welcomed staff to join them for a chat and tea. Contact

OHSAS: Structural changes
The Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Service (OHSAS) has become two
discreet functions:
-
the Occupational Health Service managed by Lara Carmel
and
-
the Health and Safety Advisory Service (HSAS) managed by
Claire Saunders.
There will continue to be strong collaborative and partnership
working between the two units but the separation is necessary as part of
the planned accreditation of the Occupational Health Service to ensure
the provision of a high quality OH service.
Over time this website and our documents will be amended to reflect the new
structure. The web-link
www.essex.ac.uk/OHSAS
will continue to be used for now.
