About the Health and Safety Committee and Sub Committees
The University has a Health and Safety Committee, Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and specialist sub-committees (covering ionising radiation, non-ionising radiation and biological safety) through which consultation on matters that affect the University as a whole take place.
The Health and Safety Committee is an advisory committee which supports Council in overseeing the implementation of the University's Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy and Plan. The membership and Terms of Reference of the Health and Safety Committee are published in the University Calendar. The Safety Advisory Group provides a contributory forum which promotes and supports the operational implementation of the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy and Plan, shares good practice on health and safety and consults on health and safety related issues. The Group reports and can refer issues to, the Health and Safety Committee. Any member of the University may request that an item relating to health and safety be placed on the agenda, either through a Trade Union Safety Representative or by contacting the HSAS.
SAG membership and terms of reference
The Ionising Radiation and Biological Safety Sub-committees also report to the Health and Safety Committee.
Ionising Radiation Protection Sub-committee supervise the use of Ionising radiation and radioactive substance in the University and to ensure that the provisions in the codes of practice for the protection of persons exposed to such radiations in research and teaching and of the University's local rules are carried out.
Biological Safety Sub-committee supervise the work involving biological hazards and genetic manipulation within the University and ensure the provisions of Codes of Practice and local rules for such work are complied with and approve genetic manipulation projects and prepare reports as required by the Health and Safety Executive Advisory Committee on Genetic Manipulation.
