Essex takes its place at the top table

Students working on a project together

Essex’s outstanding research profile places it at the top table, according to The Sunday Times University Guide 2013, published yesterday.

The University’s strong focus on excellence in research and excellence in education is confirmed by rankings of ninth for research quality and 18th for student satisfaction in the Guide.

Overall Essex rose one place to 46th in the rankings, which rate 122 universities and university colleges, taking into account seven key criteria including teaching excellence and employability.

“Essex takes its place at the top table in terms of its outstanding research profile, ranking in the top 10 in the UK under our methodology,” the Guide stated.

The Guide also revealed Essex is one of the most affordable leading universities to study at, with its lowest priced accommodation ranked in 25th place for affordability.

The Guide added: “The University is one of the most socially diverse and most cosmopolitan with more than 130 nationalities represented on its campuses.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony Forster said: “The University of Essex is a leading research university and we are committed to excellence in research and teaching. We are investing £200 million in new buildings, facilities and resources to further improve the learning experience.

“We are giving the highest priority to ensuring our graduates are equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience to succeed. New initiatives to promote employability include Essex Abroad, which aims to increase the numbers of students studying, working or volunteering abroad during their time at the University, and Languages for All, which offers students free language tuition.”

Students’ Union Vice President (Education) Zain Kukaswasdia said: “The Students’ Union has worked with the University on a number of initiatives to enhance the teaching and learning experience. The Students’ Union is really excited about the investment being made into new teaching and learning facilities which will further support the good academic experience students receive.

“We are now working very closely with the University on improving graduate prospects for our students, initiatives such as the Big Essex Award, the annual vOscars-awards and many other employability projects will help raise the skills, knowledge and experience of students graduating from Essex.”
