Awards hat-trick for Lecture Hall
Colchester Campus
Two buildings on the Colchester Campus have won prestigious awards in the 2008 Colchester2020 and RIBA Architectural Awards.
The Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall made it a hat-trick of design awards when it was announced as joint winner in the New Contemporary Buildings category with St Anne’s Community Centre. The Lecture Hall, which opened in autumn 2006, has already won a Civic Trust Award and a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East award.
The new Centre for Brain Sciences collected the award in the Sustainable Developments category. The building, which provides a research centre for the Department of Psychology, is one of the most environmentally sustainable and energy efficient buildings on campus, with solar shading, a rainwater recovery system and a ground source heat pump.
The biennial awards aim to help promote Colchester as a prestigious regional centre. Winners were announced on 7 November at the Forum for the Built Environment’s Anglian Lecture. Jo Edwards, Colchester2020’s Joint Lead Partner for Heritage and Culture, said: ‘Once again the awards have shown that there is a great passion in Colchester to produce great architecture.’
