Scholarships for talented science, technology and mathematics students

Students who have received Dangoor scholarships

Budding science, technology, engineering and mathematics students studying at the University of Essex have received Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships worth £1,000 to support their studies.

The scholarships are only available at leading research universities who are members of the prestigious 1994 Group or Russell Group and were awarded to a total of 33 students from across Essex and the UK who joined the University this year.

There are another 33 Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships available for students applying to start at Essex in 2012.

The students from the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Mathematical Sciences officially received their scholarships at a special presentation attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Jules Pretty.

Those receiving scholarships came from across the country including London, Dorset, Kent and Nottinghamshire. There were also many scholarship winners from Essex and Suffolk including Billericay, Colchester, Chelmsford, Ipswich, Maldon, Southend and Wickford.

Carla Pepper, from Colchester, who has just started her studies in CSEE, said: “As well as this being an acknowledgement of my hard work in previous years, it will also mean some of the financial worries of being a student will be alleviated.”

Matthew Barber, from Portland in Dorset, who is also studying at CSEE, said: “Being awarded this has furthered my drive to achieve my potential. With regards to my studies the scholarship has reaffirmed my motivation and alongside the high standard of lecturing the University of Essex provides I cannot wait to see what the future holds."

Rebecca Gowler, from Maldon, who has just started at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, said: "I am honoured to have received the Eliahou Dangoor Scholarship as I know it is a very rare and prestigious award and it will help me greatly with my studies."

The Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships were established by philanthropist Dr Naim Dangoor and are named after his son. They offer opportunities to the best students across the country to help them realise their potential.
