Double graduation success for father and daughter

Nick and Danielle Tile

A double success is being celebrated by Nick Tile and his daughter Danielle after they both successfully graduated from the University of Essex last week.

Mother and daughter Maria Manuela Simarro and Margarida Santos Silva also celebrated two generations graduating together.

Project manager Nick Tile, 57, from Wivenhoe, received a Masters degree in Environmental Governance from the Department of Biological Sciences while daughter Danielle, 21, from Lexden, graduated in World Performance after completing her studies at East 15 Acting School in Southend.

The family already have strong links with the University as Nick's late mother Maureen worked as secretary to the Department of Literature in the 1980s.

Nick, who is now studying climate change at Essex Masters level, said: "This was a once in a lifetime event. It was great fun, but it was also lovely to see the huge smile on Danielle's face when she shook hands with the Chancellor and received her degree."

The Santos Silva family also has strong links with the University, with Professor of Economics João Santos Silva robed up to watch his daughter Margarida Santos Silva graduate with an MA in Politics. Margarida's mother Maria Manuela Simarro was awarded a BSc in Psychology at a ceremony on the Colchester Campus the previous day.

More than 2,300 students graduated from Essex this year in the largest graduation ceremonies seen at the University. Nine ceremonies took place over three days, with the University's Chancellor, Lord Phillips of Sudbury, presiding over each one.

Honorary graduates this year included writer and broadcaster Joan Bakewell, author, journalist and former politician Chris Mullin, founding professor of the University’s Department of Biological Sciences Sir John Ashworth, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC; acclaimed filmmaker and the Mexican Embassy’s former Cultural Attaché Ignacio Duran Loera and prominent Iranian feminist Professor the Baroness Afshar, OBE.

All the graduation ceremonies were available to watch live online with friends and families of the graduates watching all over the world.
