Module Description

The course looks at the principles of teaching English as a foreign language, through different contexts, purposes and approaches. The major teaching styles in ELT, and the separate skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening will be covered as well as the sub skills of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Issues such as classroom management, materials use and evaluation, curriculum and syllabus, lesson planning and error correction will also be covered, as will testing and teaching young learners. Other topics will include error correction, communicative language teaching, alternative ways of presenting language, and principles of teaching receptive and productive skills. The module consists of a weekly lecture followed up by a class in which activities and discussion of the practical application of the theory of teaching in the language classroom will be the main focus.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to make informed decisions about language teaching methods and techniques for the language classroom, be familiar with skills teaching, and be able to plan lessons, select appropriate materials, and have a knowledge of testing.

1 x 1 hr lecture 20 weeks.
1 x 1 hr follow up class 22 weeks, including revision classes.
