Module Description

The aim of this half-module is to consider literary texts - novels, plays and autobiographies - as sources of sociological and historical knowledge, especially as documents and testimony that illuminate the mentalities of the past. The module proceeds mainly through the examination and discussion of specific texts though there will be some general discussion of the sociology of literature. Both fictional and non-fictional texts will be considered and will include 'The Tempest' by William Shakespeare, Oroonoko by Aphra Behn, Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, The Interesting Narrative of Elaudah Eqiuano, Maria Edgeworth The Grateful Negro,Jane Austen Mansfield Park, The Narrative of Mary Prince, The Interesting Narrative of Frederick Douglass, Uncle Toms Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. The half module will comprise ten lectures and classes.

50 per cent Coursework Mark, 50 per cent Exam Mark

Exam Duration and Period

2:00 hour exam during Summer Examination period.

Literature and Sociology Course students must take this option plus another sociology ½ option if they are not taking SC831 (Sociology Third Year Project)
