This 15 Essex (7.5 ECTS) credit module is designed to give you an introduction to the English legal system and to help you acquire and develop a range of key skills that are important for legal studies.
This module aims to provide a structured learning environment with feedback to support your understanding of the English legal system and the developmentof your skills, in addition to promoting team working and independent learning.
Once you have successfully completed the module, you will be able to:

• read, analyse and employ legal cases and statutes;
• analyse an essay question;
• plan and execute legal research using a variety of research techniques including library and IT sources;
• communicate research findings in an appropriate written format;
• reference and attribute others’ work;
• build a bibliography
• undertake team work; and
• outline a variety of strategies for independent learning.
The module is composed of four sets of events:
(podcasts of) lectures by the School of law and the Law Librarian;
tutorials by the School of law;
seminars run by the Skills for success team;
and workshops (and one lecture) organised by the Library.
Lectures will be weekly and will be in the form of videos and podcasts to listen to, as well as supporting written materials. In addition, thelaw librarian Ai Gooch will run some videos and/or podcasts on research skills.There will be ten one-hourtutorials, one per week of teaching (10 weeks in the Autumn term).In parallel, the Skills for success team will run seminarsin weeks 2 and 3, weeks 4 and 5, and weeks 6 and 7. These events run fortnightlyand are mandatory.
