Module Description

The module focuses on the linguistic differentiation of women and men. We review the findings of sociolinguistic research in this area and critically examine the sociolinguistic explanations of sex differences in linguistic behaviour and language use. The module also covers the repercussions of these findings on sociolinguistic theory, methodology, and analytical practices.

Learning outcomes

Generally the module enhances the students' understanding of sociolinguistic argumentation, methodologies and theory, and enables them to handle debates and conduct research in the area of gender differentiation.

2-hour lecture for 10 weeks.
