The overall objective of the module is to provide the necessary basis for students to achieve Final Honours level of competence in French language skills. Students will consolidate the knowledge and skills gained in their previous study of French and develop their language competence and cultural knowledge to a level at which they can engage in professional activities.
With this module students can expect to:
• Deal quickly and precisely with any written or spoken document (summarise, explain, comment or analyse);
• Refine their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary of French;
• Undertake collaborative research into topical issues;
• Develop to near-native standard their conversation skills;
• Consolidate their knowledge of social and cultural aspects of France and some of the regions/countries in which French is spoken;
• Develop collaborative learning strategies, public speaking and critical thinking.
• Practise and expand transferable skills such as intercultural awareness and language mediation
skills, communication and presentation skills, independent learning, creative and analytical
thinking, reflective skills, problem-solving, team-working, disciplined time-management, research skills and use of electronic media.
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
• Demonstrate a near-native level of understanding of both written and spoken French, in different registers and styles;
• Show a deep understanding and appropriate use of French grammar and vocabulary, including some idiomatic expressions;
• Express themselves effortlessly and confidently in both written and spoken French in a range of registers;
• Present a clear, smoothly-flowing description or argument in a style appropriate to the context and with an effective logical structure;
• Demonstrate a knowledge of key aspects of the French history and society and of current issues in French-speaking countries and the ability to analyse and discuss them.
Materials placed on Moodle are essential to the module and should be treated like a textbook. They must be downloaded, printed and brought to classes. Materials will be added to Moodle when needed, and you are expected to check updates regularly.
The module aims are achieved through a range of activities, both in class (3 contact hours per week) and outside, with the use of a dedicated online learning platform (Moodle). Authentic (textual or audiovisual) materials are used for listening and reading comprehension, analysis of content and language, development and consolidation of vocabulary and grammar, and as a basis for discussion and presentations (oral and written). They include media reports, books, films, etc. Students' work is reinforced by feedback from staff in class, in office hours, or online.
