Module description

This module consists of either



  • A 4000-word dissertation for BA Art History students


OR



  • A 4000-word proposal to develop a heritage project that could include public engagement in museum and heritage sites, analogue and digital projects for preservation and communication of heritage and/or museum content, guidelines for best practices of heritage management and preservation, etc. for students on the courses BA Art History, Heritage and Museum Studies and BA Curating, Heritage and Human Rights.


OR



  • The equivalent of a 4000-word project proposal or a 2000-word project proposal with practice output to develop a virtual exhibition that could include a checklist of objects, catalogue entries and a catalogue essay for students on the BA Curating.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To allow final year students to conceive, develop and complete an extended piece of written work based primarily on their own independent research into a topic which they have chosen themselves.

  • To allow final year students with an interest in heritage to design, develop, and assess a heritage project.

  • To allow dinal year students with an interest in curatorial practice to consider, develop and curate a virtual exhibition.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to have:



  1. Developed relevant research skills, such as independence of thought, the capacity to organise and structure a longer piece of work, the ability to explore the secondary literature on a particular topic in a more autonomous way and to develop their own ideas and arguments more in depth than in a standard-length essay.

  2. Deepened their knowledge in the area relevant to the topic they have selected.

  3. Developed transferable skills such as the ability to work with others (the supervisor), time management and clear communication, both oral and written.

  4. Developed confidence in relevant digital skills.

Learning and teaching methods

Once the proposal has been approved the student will be entitled to a minimum of one and half and a maximum of three hours of one-to-one supervisions (in addition to the initial meeting where the topic is discussed and agreed).  Please note that there is no entitlement to supervision during the vacation preceding the submission date of the project.

The supervisor will help guide you as you begin to develop the heritage project, start researching the project and write the proposal.

The finished product should show an all-round grasp of your subject and the ability to present your material clearly, succinctly and in the most appropriate sequence. It should also demonstrate evidence of a serious engagement with your project, a mastery of the information currently available, and the inclusion of your own critical voice in relation to the project.
