Module description

This module will explore key topics for practising sport and exercise psychologists, and develop skills to undertake consultancy at individual, group, community or population levels. The module will provide you with an understanding of the importance of maintaining ethical standards, along with important insight into the different frameworks adopted in applied work. You will develop your ability to work with different clients and to develop, monitor and evaluate interventions. You will also explore the potential role of technology in contemporary sport and exercise psychology, and the importance of entrepreneurial skills and reflective practice for a successful career.

Module aims

The aim of this module is to develop your knowledge of key topics and frameworks in sport and exercise psychology practice along with the fundamental skills required to forge a successful career working at individual, group, community or population levels.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of issues within professional practice in sport and exercise psychology.
2. Identify ethical issues in applied sport and exercise psychology.
3. Develop skills to work effectively with different clients and populations in sport and exercise psychology.
4. Critically reflect upon own professional skills to benefit future learning and practice.
5. Develop scientific resources to enhance psychological aspects of performance or well-being.
6. Coherently present ideas in written and oral form.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will employ a range of teaching and learning methods including seminars, voluntary support classes, reading and discussion tasks, questions and online resources. Seminars: 10 x 2 hours Seminars will be used to introduce and discuss key topics for practising sport and exercise psychologists, and to develop skills to undertake consultancy at individual, group, community or population levels. Seminar activities will involve discussions of readings, case-studies and other materials, and role playing scenarios based on potential situations sport and exercise psychologists may encounter in their profession. These activities will provide important formative feedback in preparation for the module assessments. Independent: Students are expected to undertake directed and independent reading of key textbooks, journal articles, and other materials to support their learning and help prepare assignments. Case studies and associated problem-based learning activities will also be provided on the virtual learning environment to facilitate discussions of scenarios encountered by practising sport and exercise psychologists. Online: Seminar materials and resources for the independent study tasks will appear on the SE741 Moodle pages. Voluntary support classes: Voluntary support classes are available to discuss individuals' learning experiences and encourage reflective practice. These will also serve to support preparation for the assessments and offer formative feedback.

1) A 10 minute vodcast or equivalent resource on psychological aspects of performance or well-being (50%). 2) A 2,000 word critical summary of a current practice in a sport or exercise setting (50%).
