This module is an essential component of all the Postgraduate Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Imaging awards. It introduces students to the practical skill of musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging including the ESSR protocols. The role of imaging for different professional groups is acknowledged including the varied documentation and communication requirements.
This module aims to introduce students to musculoskeletal ultrasound as a modality. Relevant scientific principles, practical use and clinical application will be included. The potential clinical role of this modality is extensive; varying between professionals and work environments. The module is designed to enhance clinical competency and facilitate clinicians’ professional development.
This module would be appropriate for health care practitioners who require a basic introduction to musculoskeletal ultrasound that has the quality assurance of a university based module. Practitioners could include radiology trainees, rheumatologists, sonographers, experienced physiotherapists and general practitioners with a special interest in musculoskeletal medicine.
This module enables students to meet the following learning outcomes:
1. Demonstrate an effective examination of the main peripheral joints using ultrasound
2. Critically evaluate the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool with musculoskeletal pathologies
3. Compare and contrast normal and pathological findings identified through the use of ultrasound
4. Evaluate the role of ultrasound within their professional practice
The module comprises an introduction to the following content:
* National and international guidelines for musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging.
* Clinical governance and quality assurance issues
* Extensive practical scanning.
* Application of ultrasound to musculoskeletal presentations including soft tissue pathology, rheumatology and rehabilitation.

• Seminar discussions
