Module description

This module develops the students' knowledge, understanding and skills in treatments available to sports therapists in their practice. Therapeutic modalities will include soft tissue techniques and other manual techniques, including spinal and peripheral joint mobilisations. The use of taping will also be considered. Students will learn to undertake a reasoned approach in their practice of sport and exercise injuries closely based on typical healing times and recovery.

Module aims

The aim of this module is to build on existing knowledge and introduce a range of the core skills a Sports Therapist will require and draw from when treating sports related injury. It will develop the skills of peripheral and spinal manual therapy.

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:

1. Select and demonstrate the application of a range of therapeutic techniques.
2. Provide a clinically reasoned argument for the selection of a range of therapeutic techniques
3. Demonstrate an awareness of precautions and contraindications when administering

Module information

Overview
The module will consist of taught sessions to introduce key concepts of treatments of manual therapies, taping and massage. From this paired and small group activities with practical demonstrations of treatments will be utilised to assist practical skills instruction. Problem based learning will allow students to explore the presentations and treatment of common sports related injuries acknowledging the process and timings of healing and repair.

* Current practices in the treatment of sports and exercise injuries


Learning and teaching methods

Overview The learning, teaching and assessment of this module are closely integrated. A variety of teaching approaches will be used. Applied examples of how this knowledge can be of value in a practical and real life context will be interwoven into these taught and student led sessions. Interactive theory classes will be used to introduce and develop knowledge and application. There will be tutorial sessions for collaborative learning through group work and independent study, both directed and self-directed. Lectures: Theoretical concepts underpinning the key concepts which will be further explored in practical sessions will be introduced in class based interactive lectures. Independent: Students will be given pre-reading to carry out as theoretical preparation for class based theory and practical sessions. Students must commit to practicing skills introduced and taught in supervised practical sessions in their own time, ideally within the week of first encountering the techniques in the first instance to consolidate and improve confidence in their practical intervention / treatment skills. Placement: Learners will be able to implement the content of this module within the university's sports injury clinic during their placement application in year 3. Online: Online topics will be used by the module lead to inform students of the required preparation for weekly sessions and to promote online discussions / forums relating to topics / conditions covered and their treatment Tutorials: Personal student tutorials can be arranged with prior notice and expected to take place within 2 weeks of the original request. Tutor led revision sessions will be factored into the module timetable Skills: Practical skills will be first introduced from a theoretical and evidence based viewpoint before demonstration and small group observed practice will be used to develop individual's hands-on and psychomotor skills with further feedback and discussion points.

Formative - There will be an ongoing formative review of the learning process via professional discussions and practical scenarios. - A formative Mock OSPE will be take place and the learner’s performance will be explored for working feedback. Summative - Practical OSPE (100% weighting) (LO 1, 2 and 3) Should a student demonstrate practice which compromises patient safety, the OSPE will be terminated. The student will be offered a reassessment opportunity according to the programme’s rules of assessment.
