Module description

This module provides a detailed overview of the most common statistical tests used by postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in psychology.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To consolidate and extend understanding of basic statistical concepts, mean comparison testing (t-test & ANOVA) and statistical relationships (correlations & regression).

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to have a solid conceptual understanding of and confidence in using a number of fundamental statistical techniques, including:



  1. Measures of central tendency & dispersion.

  2. Data distributions, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals.

  3. Correlation & simple regression.

  4. Mean comparison across 2 groups (t-test).

  5. Mean comparison across 2+ groups (one-way ANOVA).

  6. Multiple Linear Regression.

  7. Mean comparison across factors (factorial ANOVA).

  8. Moderation in Multiple Linear Regression.

  9. Mediation in Multiple Linear Regression

Module information

Students will develop an understanding when to use what statistical technique and have an awareness of how to address common problems encountered when using these procedures.


Students will know how to interpret and report these techniques appropriately, and be aware of common errors in the interpretation of data.


Students will acquire considerable experience of using SPSS to analyse data, and will develop sufficient statistical computing skills to independently analyse a postgraduate research project.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • One 2-hour lecture per week.
  • One 1-hour workshop per week.
