This module is an empirical investigation into an area of Psychology, leading to the production of a written report resembling research reviews published in Psychology journals. Student will gain first-hand experience of behavioural methods and/or research techniques chosen in agreement with their placement supervisor(s).
The unique aspect of this module is the focus on obtaining an in-depth understanding of a placement-specific research method (e.g., a psychological paradigm or research technique) through reading, discussion and application. There is no specific requirement for data collection beyond that which may be necessary for comprehensive understanding of the application of a paradigm or technique.
The aims of this module are:
- To develop in students the skills and knowledge to design, execute and write up empirical research under the guidance of a supervisor.
- To make students aware of the ethical issues underlying psychological experimentation.
- To develop students' skills and knowledge of statistics and psychological methodology.
- To gain experience of and feedback on oral presentation.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Understand research design in empirical research.
- Apply knowledge of statistics and psychological methodology.
- Have direct experience of performing psychological research.
- Have an awareness of ethical issues underling psychological experimentation.
- Provide an oral presentation.
- Experience of written reporting of psychology research methods.
- Show evidence of the above through professional conduct and commitment to a research project

Personal supervision will include contribution to research group meetings in the form of contributing to discussion of reading list materials, experimental design, application of techniques and analysis of data.
