This module provides knowledge and support in preparing a rigorous literature review to take its place in the final thesis. It will help students develop good literature search strategies and to be able to justify their choice of literature covered. It will help students use the literature review to identify the gap their research will fill and to support the need for their project. They will be assisted in constructing a literature review which is not only a report on literature studied but an argument developing through their exploration of the relevant sources to which their project will contribute.
This module aims to provide knowledge of how to conduct a systematic literature search and to write a well-argued literature review.
1. Knowledge of research literature in their field and an understanding of how this knowledge relates to their research question (A1)
2. Knowledge of the range of available research approaches and an understanding of how this knowledge relates to their chosen area of research (A2)
3. In-depth knowledge of chosen subject (A4)
4. Understanding of ethical issues involved in research (B2)
5. Understanding of the applications of research to depth psychotherapy/ psychodynamic counselling (B3)
6. Ability to conduct rigorous literature review (C1)
The module will take the form of 3 seminars on literature review, supported by the ongoing monthly individual supervision and independent research.
1. Introduction and discussion of the function of the literature review: Principles of systematic literature search and choices to be made
2. Refining searches and managing material: Constructing an argument in a literature review
3 Review `clinic`
Seminars and discussion group will be delivered, either in a block with other seminars or spread out through the first term. Reading will be set beforehand. Ongoing individual supervision will provide support to the students` independent study on the topic of their choice. Students are expected to be conducting extensive independent study in their chosen area thereby gaining experience of exploring the relevant literature for their project.
The final seminar will be one in which issues and problems arising out of the literature review can be discussed.
