Module description

Throughout the year students will be pursuing a project based on a subject of their choice. They will draw on the theory and the practical experiences from the three years of the course and apply these to a subject of their choice, exploring the conscious and unconscious dynamics involved. Further details about the structure and content of the Dissertation can be found below.

There will be an introductory seminar to help with choosing the project, followed by two seminars on basic research skills concerned with getting started: what is a dissertation and how to develop a good research question and find the best resources. This is followed by a proposal presentation which students will make to the tutors and their peer group. After the presentation each student is assigned a Supervisor and can arrange at least two supervision meetings with a named member of staff to monitor progress and offer support. Finally, while students are developing their proposal into a dissertation they will attend two further seminars focused upon learning to critically evaluate their resources and emerging evidence.

Aims

The module will enable you:

* To demonstrate intellectual independence and originality by choosing your own subject of study and defining its nature and scope
* To experience the process of producing knowledge and conducting independent enquiry in a specific area of interest to them
* To consolidate your written communication and intellectual skills by presenting the results of your research in a clearly written, cogently argued, logically structured and properly referenced
* To pull together the learning and experiences from the course and apply them to a topic of the student's choice
* To develop greater confidence in the flexible application of psychodynamic understanding

Learning Outcomes

* Students will gain a deeper awareness of the theoretical application and relevance of psychodynamic enquiry into areas of interest
* Students will have a better capacity to apply learning flexibly
* Students will gain knowledge of basic research skills such as literature searches and construction of longer and deeper argument
* Students will gain knowledge about and application of critical analysis in research
* Students will have a greater capacity for independent learning

Learning and teaching methods

There will be an introductory workshop followed by six seminars. Students will also attend at least 2 individual dissertation supervisions.
