The aim of this module is to allow you to undertake an independent research assignment under the guidance of a supervisor. The assignment may consist of an in-depth review of the research literature on a specific topic that you have agreed on with your supervisor and/or comprise an empirical project. You will be expected to read widely on the topic agreed with your supervisor, consulting both theoretical work and empirical studies, as appropriate. You will synthesise, analyse and critically evaluate existing work and identify a relevant research question/relevant research questions that is/are as yet unanswered. You may collect and analyse data to answer the question(s), as appropriate.
The topic of the research assignment can be in any area of linguistics. However, please note that prior to undertaking this module, you will need to:
(1) identify a suitable topic,
(2) find a supervisor who is willing to direct your work on this topic, and
(3) complete a proposal form that needs to be submitted to the departmental postgraduate student administrator by 16:00 on Monday 16th January 2023.
The proposal is also subject to the formal approval by the LG699 module director.
This module is aimed at allowing you to explore a topic that is of interest to you and on which you have some background knowledge, but that is not covered in any taught module.
The aim of the assignment is to serve as practice and preparation for subsequent reviewing of literature and/or subsequent empirical work, e.g. in the context of your MA dissertation.
You will develop in-depth subject knowledge of the topic area of your choice through engaging with a wide range of research literature. When preparing your assignment, you will hone your critical thinking ability, academic writing skills and, where appropriate, your research methods skills. You will perfect the use of appropriate referencing conventions and develop your ability to present work professionally. As the assignment is self-directed, you will have the opportunity to improve your organisational and time management skills in preparation for subsequent independent work, e.g. your MA project.
Please note that there are no timetabled sessions associated with this module. Enrolment for this module is subject to approval by the department.
There are no lectures or seminars associated with this module. The module consists of self-directed work under the guidance of a supervisor. You should allow the same amount of time as for a taught module, i.e. about 50 hours of work in total.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
