This module will introduce students to actual classroom practice through teaching real students. Lesson preparation will be discussed with students prior to their actual teaching, by providing feedback on their lesson plans and materials. After each teaching practice, feedback on what went well and what could be improved will also be provided to students. The module includes observed teaching and peer observation tasks.
The aims of the module are:
• To offer students experience with classroom-based practice through a range of hands-on activities (e.g. observed teaching, peer observation tasks).
• To introduce students to designing and evaluating their own materials for classroom use.
• To introduce students to teacher decision-making and reflective processes and practice.
• To familiarise students with the importance of understanding and catering for different needs in classrooms.
• To observe good practice and evaluate their peers’ practice.
By the end of the module students should be able to:
• Plan and deliver their own lessons with confidence.
• Produce their own materials for classroom use.
• Be reflective and critical of their own and their peers’ practice.
• Understand teachers’ and learners’ needs.
The module will run over 10 weeks. There will be 20 contact hours in total, i.e. 1 X 2 hours per week. Students will be required to teach English language classes every other week (or every three weeks). This will depend on the number of students registered for the module. Students will need to collaborate and share lessons with their peers. Students will also have the opportunity to have individual tutorials with the module lecturers where they can ask for advice on their lesson plans and teaching materials.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
