MA Q91T12 Advanced Interpreting with Specialised Translation (Chinese-English)
The module is a progressive module of LA894 and aims to prepare the students for the professional level of simultaneous interpreting tasks.
Based on the practice and skills acquisition from LA94, this module introduces new technologies including hardware, software, and the use of search engines/corpora, the balanced coordination between human and computer to better analyse text-based materials and improve the efficiency of advance task preparation. The integration of technology will also allow interpreters to develop more strategies to reduce cognitive load and cope with on-site challenges. The focus of the practices will be precise renditions and professional presentation of SI and bilateral interpreting.
With a clearly defined scenario and context at each class, interpreters will be required to perform under strict peer and expert review.
At the end of the module, students will be assessed on bilateral and simultaneous interpreting (C-E and E-C) modes with the assistance of technologies.
This module aims to reinforce the interpreting skills and strategies acquired from LA894 and further improve the interpreting quality and pre-task preparation efficiency with available technologies.
Achieve advanced level of simultaneous interpreting strategies and techniques
Achieve advanced level of consecutive interpreting strategies and techniques at bilateral settings (i.e. Q&A session and press conference)
Further develop flexible translation techniques for the purpose of accurate interpreting
Gain conference/meeting organising experience and essential communication skills
Expand schematic knowledge and corresponding terminologies with selected themes and topics
Understanding difference between spoken and written discourse; analysing speeches from phonological and semantic perspectives
Apply appropriate register/style according to working environment and context
Professional evaluation on personal performance and peer performance
Off-campus interpreting event will be organised during the term.
Mock conference, mock press conference, presentation, role-play, public speaking, and booth practice.
