Module description

The aim of this module in spring term is to consolidate the basic concepts and skills required in consecutive interpreting to beginners, e.g., short-term memory, note-taking; active listening; logical understanding and processing of the main ideas of the speech; pre-task preparation (i.e. research, background knowledge and terminology-building); the ability to produce accurate and concise interpreting which is grammatically correct, and faithful to the register and appropriate for the style of the speaker; public speaking skills in mini-mock conference (projection, posture, style, pacing, overcoming nervous habits, withstanding pressure); the ability to provide and receive constructive criticism; the ability to monitor one's own work and identify and learn from mistakes made; adaptability in challenging and changing circumstances; and the ability to work with speakers, colleagues, texts, and AV facilities.

Module aims

The aims of this module are to consolidate following skills:
1. To improve practical ability to interpret between English and Chinese and vice versa through a wider variety of tasks.
2. To improve intermediate and high level of competence and effective strategies for CI.
3. To improve computer-aided tools for self and paired-up training.
4. To work with interpreting partners under challenging circumstances on different types of assignments.
5. To better prepare for an assignment while communicating with the event organizer and knowing where to obtain resources that will facilitate interpreting.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, you will demonstrate the following skills:
Knowledge outcomes: By the end of PG year, students will have had the opportunity to gain the following:
*understanding of the work ethics as a consecutive interpreter
*basic knowledge required to work as a consecutive interpreter in scientific, medical, academic and business sectors
Skills outcomes: By the end of the course, students will have had the opportunity to develop:
* ability to undertake interpreting assignments at consecutive interpreting settings with a professional manner
* research skills and pre-task preparation techniques while building up background knowledge with given topics
* ability to flexibly use interpreting/linguistic analytical skills in interpreting settings
* ability to organise consecutive interpreting service for meetings/conferences
* ability to conduct peer- and self-evaluation

Besides class attendance, students are encouraged to: 1) keeping up on current events of lecture/seminar, and mock conference sessions 2) performing research and preparation for in-class practice
