DIP T1Q909 Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting

Module description

This 10-week module aims to develop basic understanding of the profession of simultaneous interpreting (SI) and provide foundational training of SI skills. Materials will be selected to guide students' learning and practising of beginning levels of SI skills, including shadowing, multi-tasking, information processing, syntactic re-structuring, pre-task preparation, coping tactics and use of SI equipment.

Module aims

This module aims to develop skills and strategies for students to professionally prepare for foundational level of SI tasks, cognitively allocate attentional efforts to perform foundational level of SI tasks, to deliver meaningful messages in target language(s) and monitor personal performance under SI mode and conduct peer evaluation of SI performances for classmates.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, you will demonstrate the following skills:
• Balanced practice of split attention
• Successful delivery of target language under the mode of simultaneous interpreting
• Demonstration of skills and strategies to perform foundational level of SI tasks
• Demonstration how to use SI equipment as a simultaneous interpreter

Learning and teaching methods

To ensure the best result of the module, weekly tutorials will be arranged in the Interpreting laboratory and the duration of each class will be 3 hours. Both teacher and students shall give feedback on the interpretation performed in this class.
