MA V5T112 Western Marxism and Translation
In this module students will be engaged in translation of texts in specialised domains to gain knowledge of literary translation and translation in socio-political, legal or technical and scientific fields. Students will learn to analyse source texts with specific subject background and culture awareness, identify translation challenges and overcome them by applying different strategies and translation techniques.
In line with current translation practices, students will be trained to translate into both English and Chinese. This will ensure that students are equipped to enter the translation market and have an edge over their competitors.
This module will enable students to:
• To develop a good method to prepare for translation assignments (e.g. background reading on subject field, use of parallel texts, etc.)
• To use techniques to compile and/or maintain a glossary of terms relevant to each translation task.
• To run quality assurance checks
To evaluate the effectiveness of techniques used and be able to argue knowledgeably for and against specific translation choices.
1. Identify features of texts and recognise potential translation problems in specialised areas in English/Chinese translation.
2. Develop strategies and creative solutions for specialised translation tasks.
3. Undertake both self- and group assessment of the translation quality based on given criteria.
Expand background knowledge in areas that require a greater awareness and more intensive fact checking and information research.
Weekly translation practice of texts belonging to different genres and dealing with different topics such as: fiction and non-fiction novels, socio-political statements, business, science and technology. Where appropriate, classes will be complemented by workshops and seminars led by professionals in the field.
Students will learn from class practice, homework analysis, group presentation and discussion, feedback from teacher and classmates.
