The course concentrates on written and aural comprehension. Students are introduced to basic grammar structures and are encouraged to develop their writing skills through a variety of different tasks.
The course also encourages students to use self-study materials (videos, films, newspapers and magazines and television programmes from Spain/Latin America). The portfolios assessment requires students to expand their vocabulary and helps them to learn structures and verb conjugations.
The aim of this course is for students to be able to understand and communicate in everyday situations, using a variety of basic structures and tenses.

The following learning outcomes are attained:
- The ability to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, university and leisure.
- The development of written skills on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
A greater understanding of Hispanic culture and awareness of some of the key cultural practices, icons and their work.
