Module description

This module allows participants to consider the factors involved in designing and developing a health professions curriculum.

Participants will be able to demonstrate leadership and innovation in designing units of learning that optimise the experiences and achievements of learners in the health professions. Participants will critically engage with the political, philosophical and regulatory discourses that frame and constraints health professions education and undertake course design and development in context.

Module aims

This module will enable health care practitioners to design and develop high quality, innovative training and education for others, in the academic and practice environment.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the participant will be able to:

1. Design and develop appropriate and innovative face to face and/or online curricula for healthcare practitioners

2. Critically evaluate the professional philosophies that underpin healthcare curriculum development

3. Identify and critically evaluate the educational assumptions underpinning, and the political context surrounding, healthcare curriculum development.

Module information

Curriculum is a contested concept but is also the most fundamental in terms of defining education. In this module participants will explore approaches to curriculum design and development in health professions education. The curriculum in health professions education is complexified by the often competing political, regulatory and professional factors that influence it. Designing and developing curricula that satisfy these competing demands requires critical understanding of the context of professional education as a domain that resides within both higher education institutions and service providers and critical innovation in addressing the challenge of producing health professionals for the future.

If this is the case we will of course notify anyone who has applied to take this course in a particular term as soon as possible and offer an opportunity to discuss alternative options.

Learning and teaching methods

Three full days of face to face contact using a range of teaching and learning strategies. Classroom-based sessions are supported by, and consolidated with, technology-enhanced learning. Individual supervision and formative feedback
