It is acknowledged that the practice environment provides important learning opportunities. In order for these opportunities to be fully realised, practitioners working with learners need to be knowledgeable, skilled and expert, in both healthcare and educational practices.
This module is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and expertise of health care practitioners as educators, in both the facilitation of learning and the assessment of learners in practice and higher education settings. Participants will consider how the use of effective teaching, learning and assessment strategies will enable learners engaged in professional development to develop the knowledge and skills required for professional practice.
To enable health care practitioners to become critically reflective, evidence-based facilitators of learning and assessment in clinical and/or higher education practice environments
On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
1. Critically justify and reflect upon the strategies and methods you employ to facilitate learning.
2. Critically evaluate learning theories and philosophies in relation to own educational practices.
3. Demonstrate and critically evaluate the attributes of an effective educator.
4. Critically apply and evaluate assessment processes that facilitate learning according to the principles of assessment.
5. Critically reflect on and evaluate your own experiences as an educator, with reference to relevant professional regulatory body requirements where appropriate
This module is suitable for any healthcare professional supporting practice-based learning in clinical or higher education settings. It is mapped against the requirements for:
GP Associate Trainers and GP Trainers;
Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA);
And, is a requirement – in combination with other modules – to achieve NMC Teacher (stage 4) status.
Please note that if insufficient numbers of students (i.e. <10) opt to take this module we may have to cancel it at short notice.
If this is the case we will of course notify anyone who has applied to take this course in a particular term as soon as possible and offer an opportunity to discuss alternative options.
Four full days of face to face contact using a range of teaching and learning strategies. Classroom-based sessions are supported by, and consolidated with, technology-enhanced learning.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
