Module description

This is a core module of the MSc Periodontology and the MSc Advanced Periodontology Practice that is designed to ensure all students have an advanced understanding of the principles associated with the clinical aspects of periodontal disease and therapy and their application to specialised practice.

Module aims

1. To review methods of periodontal assessment and diagnosis, treatment planning of more complex cases;
2. To review the principles of non-surgical and surgical treatment of periodontal disease and to introduce more complex modalities of treatment;
3. To develop the student’s scientific study of the subject of Periodontology, maintaining an evidence base for their practice.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the relationships between relevant academic theories and professional practice in relation to periodontology
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the methods of periodontal assessment and diagnosis and treatment planning of more complex cases
3. Understand the principles of non-surgical and surgical treatment of periodontal disease and the introduction of more complex modalities of treatment.
4. Critically review dental literature

Module information

The module consists of taught sessions by clinical experts in the field of periodontology covering theoretical teaching, demonstration and teaching of clinical skills using simulation and learning from clinical work based placement undertaking clinical competencies on patients under supervision.
Teaching is evidence-based and linked to contemporary literature.

The module comprises the following content:
Introduction to the module
1. Restorative Periodontal Interactions
2. Systemic disease & Periodontal health, Mucocutaneous lesions
3. Acute conditions affecting the periodontium
4. Periodontal Physiology and occlusion considerations
5. Aggressive periodontitis

Learning and teaching methods

The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches. Lectures will introduce key concepts. There will be skills-focussed practical sessions, including the use of simulated practice using the dental skills lab. Clinical and reflective log analysis will provide authentic examples to relate theory and practice. Tutorials/Seminars between students and academic supervisors and experiential learning in practice-based placement with experienced clinical educators, will further enhance teaching and learning. Lectures: Lectures by members of the Oral Health Science team, University of Essex, supplemented on occasions by external experts. Independent: Regular guided learning tasks will be set for students using the Moodle virtual learning platform. Online: Discussion forums will be utilised for enhancing learning in appropriate topic areas; reading of evidence-based articles will be available. Tutorials: It is expected that the student will meet with their personal tutor at least twice during the module. Students are encouraged to request further personal tutorials at any stage during the module if they feel this is necessary.
