Module description

This is a core module of the MSc Periodontology and the MSc Advanced Periodontal Practice that is designed to ensure all students have a sound level of knowledge and skills within the subject area of periodontology and have an advanced understanding of the basic science associated with periodontal disease and therapy.

Module aims

1. To review methods of periodontal assessment, diagnosis, simple treatment planning and obtaining
informed consent to treatment
2. To review the principles of non-surgical and simple surgical treatment of periodontal disease.
3. To teach and/or reinforce the science associated with the oral cavity and the periodontium in
particular.
4. To teach and/or reinforce the science associated with periodontal disease and the principles
associated with periodontal therapies.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:
1. Be capable of undertaking basic periodontal assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning.
2. Demonstrate good communication skills and understand the principles of gaining and recording informed
consent to treatment.
3. Demonstrate effective and safe practical techniques.
4. Demonstrate an in depth understanding of the sciences associated with the oral cavity, the periodontium
and periodontal disease.
5. Appraise the complex multifactorial pathogenesis of periodontal disease.

Module information

The module consists of taught sessions by clinical experts in the field of oral health science and dental therapy covering theoretical teaching, linking clinical work based placement. Teaching is evidencebased and linked to contemporary literature.

The module comprises the following content:

Introduction to the programme and module
Periodontal Instrumentation
Natural History and Disease Progression
Plaque Control
Basic treatment of the periodontal patient

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches. Lectures will introduce key concepts. There will be skills-focussed practical sessions, including the use of simulated practice using the dental skills lab. Clinical and reflective log analysis will provide authentic examples to relate theory and practice. Individual tutorials, as negotiated between student and academic supervisors and experiential learning in practice-based placements with experienced clinical educators, will further enhance teaching and learning. Lectures: Lectures by members of the Oral Health Science team, University of Essex, supplemented on occasions by external experts. Independent: Regular guided learning tasks will be set for students using the Moodle virtual learning platform. Placement: Online: Discussion forums will be utilised for enhancing learning in appropriate topic areas; reading of evidence-based articles will be available. Tutorials: It is expected that the student will meet with their personal tutor at least twice during the module. Students are encouraged to request further personal tutorials at any stage during the module if they feel this is necessary.
