Module description

It is a professional requirement that practitioners are able to make judicious use of the current best available evidence, in order for it to be used to shape, advance and inform practice.

After qualifying some graduates may perform roles that require them to plan, undertake and commission research-based activities in order to advance practice, and it is therefore essential that they are equipped with the basic skills to fulfil this expectation.

Module aims

To develop students’ skills and confidence in relation to evidence-based practice and service development

To provide an opportunity to complete a defined and relevant piece of work in an autonomous and self-directed fashion

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

Identify and systematically investigate practice issues relevant to the students’ own professional area

Critically appraise and evaluate the evidence in relation to the identified topic.

Develop a detailed research or service improvement proposal that meets relevant organisational and ethical governance protocols

Demonstrate advanced understanding of the processes related to research or service improvement

Module information

Students completing this module will have previously completed both inter-professional modules, which will have enabled them to develop skills in evaluating current practice and evidence. In addition students will show ability in planning and proposing relevant research or service improvement.

Learning and teaching methods

The learning and teaching methods employed for this module can be divided into three: 1. Independent self-directed study (283 hours) 2. Tutorial sessions with allocated supervisor (6 hours) 3. Module launch and workshops (11 hours) The only conventional 'taught' group session within this module will be the module launch. Workshops will be provided to support students to further understand the process of research and service improvement. The vast majority of the learning for this module will be independent and self-directed, in order to develop students to work as autonomous and pro-active professionals once qualified. A comprehensive Moodle page with numerous resources will be provided. Whilst this module does not include placement learning it is hoped that issues and questions that students have encountered in practice can be utilised within this module, in order to construct potential research topics and questions. For the completion of this module you will be allocated a supervisor, whose role is to guide you through the process of completing your literature review and constructing a research or service improvement proposal. Where possible, your tutor will have a particular interest and/or clinical expertise relevant to your chosen topic. It is your responsibility to make regular appointments with your allocated supervisor to discuss progress and plan your work. You are entitled to up to six hours of supervision support, which is inclusive of face-to-face support, telephone discussion and email correspondence. You are responsible for recording such supervision contact on the record sheet on the module Moodle page, which you and your supervisor then both sign as an agreed record. Students will be expected to present the envisaged implications for practice of their proposals at an Inter-professional Conference in June.
