Module description

This module will introduce you to the knowledge, skills and placement that will enable you to begin developing SLT specific professional reasoning skills around the management of communication and swallowing ability and difficulty across the lifespan.

Module aims

This module aims to further develop students’ ability to identify and manage communication and swallowing ability and difficulty, developing autonomous practice ability towards readiness for practice

Module learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate the ability to critically professionally reason, identify ability and difficulty, evaluate, plan, and implement strategies for the identification, augmentation and management of Speech Language and Communication Needs, Literacy and /or dysphagia
2. To identify need and plan for potential Service Improvement
3. To critically reflect on own professional strengths, weaknesses and values and plan for NQP development

Learning and teaching methods

Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this third speech and language therapy placement module will combine preparation for the workplace led by University tutors in university and at least 40 days placement in varied locations, comprised of two separate placement experiences and representing cross lifespan opportunities; students will be placed within SLT teams in partner organisations representing the range of organisations in which SLTs are employed e.g. NHS, Not for Profit, Private practice, Education settings and Specialist settings.
